  • Prayer (Salah)

Salah, or prayer, is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and holds a central place in the daily life of a Muslim. It is a direct form of communication with Allah, allowing believers to express gratitude, seek guidance, and ask for forgiveness. Salah is performed five times a day—at dawn, midday, mid-afternoon, sunset, and night—and each prayer is an opportunity for spiritual reflection and renewal. Through the physical movements and recitations involved in prayer, Muslims cultivate humility and discipline, submitting to the will of Allah. Salah not only strengthens one's connection with God but also serves as a reminder of the importance of faith, unity, and the pursuit of righteousness. It is an essential act of worship that nurtures a Muslim's relationship with Allah, brings peace to the heart, and instills a sense of community among Muslims worldwide. Girls Praying Salah Salah is not just a ritual; it is a profound act of worship that shapes the spiritual and moral life of a Muslim. Each prayer serves as a reminder of the transient nature of life and the importance of prioritizing one's relationship with Allah above all else. Through Salah, Muslims are taught to pause amidst their busy lives, reflect on their actions, and seek Allah's guidance and mercy. The physical acts of bowing (ruku) and prostration (sujood) symbolize humility, submission, and devotion to Allah, while the recitations in Arabic, including verses from the Qur'an, reinforce the core beliefs of Islam. Salah also fosters a sense of discipline, as Muslims are required to maintain regularity in their prayers, regardless of their personal circumstances. It is a source of comfort, tranquility, and spiritual rejuvenation, allowing believers to renew their faith and align their intentions with the will of Allah. • How to Perform Wudu/Ablution

What is Wudu? Before we can perform salah we need to prepare ourselves mentally, physically, and spiritually. A large portion of this preparation is what is known as wudu. It is a purification process that every Muslim must perform before their prayer can be performed. It is such an important part of the salah that if anyone decides to leave it due to ignorance, forgetfulness, or negligence then their prayer will not be accepted by Allah. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: How to Perform Wudu/Ablution “No salah is accepted without wudu (purification)”Sahih Muslim, Book 2, Hadith 2   Step 1 – Make your intention to perform wudu The first step is to understand that you are about to begin the process of wudu so that you can perform salah. There are no words or special statements that need to be said here. Creating the intention is a matter of the heart and mind. Step 2 – Say Bismillah This is a critical part of making wudu. Before we begin to our wash ourselves we need to say Bismillah (In the Name of Allah). You can say it silently to yourself. Step 3 – Wash Your Hands Three Times Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us to begin with our right side first. That means you will need to wash your right hand from the fingertips to the wrist three times. Make sure water touches every part of the hand. Afterwards perform the same actions with your left hand three times. Step 4 – Rinse Your Mouth Three Times Take some water into your right hand and rinse your mouth three times. Do this thoroughly to clean your mouth properly. Step 5 – Sniff Water Into Your Nostrils Three Times Take some water in your right hand and sniff it into your nose. We used the word “sniff” here to give you an idea of what this means. You will need to snort or inhale the water into your nose and then blow it out, three times. Try not to take in too much water or you may hurt yourself. Step 6 – Wash Your Face Three Times Every part of the face needs to be washed. That means from ear to ear and from the top of your forehead to the bottom of your chin. Do this step three times. For men who have beards take your wet hands and pass them through your beard as you wash your face. Step 7 – Wash Your Arms Three Times Start from the fingertips and wash your right arm up to the elbow three times. Make sure that no part is left dry. Afterwards, follow the same process for your left arm and do it three times. Step 8 – Wipe Your Head Once Did you notice that step 8 says to “wipe” your head instead of “wash.” The choice of words here was intentional. Move your wet hands from the top of the forehead to the back of the head, and then from the back of the head to the forehead. This is done only once. It doesn’t matter what type of hair you have. Whether you are bald, have short hair or long hair, the process is the same. Step 9 – Clean Your Ears Once This step should be performed with the same water from step 8. Using your wet hands you will use your index fingers to clean the inside of your ears and your thumb to clean the area behind your ears. This is done only once. Similar to what was done with our hands, we will also wash our feet three times. Begin from your toes on your right foot and wash up to and including your ankle. Make sure water touches every area of the right foot, especially between the toes and the back of the ankle. Do this three times with the right foot followed by three times with the left foot. Step 11 – Recite the Shahada and the Dua When the Prophet (peace be upon him) would complete his wudu he would say the shahada: “ Ash-hadu an la ilaha  illal lahu wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluh .” This means “I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I also testify that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.” After this statement he would make the following dua: “ Allahuma j‘alnee mina tawabeen waj-‘alnee minal mutatahireen ” Which means “ O Allah, make me among those who seek repentance and make me among those who purify themselves. ” At this point your wudu is complete and you can begin to pray. But how was it revealed to our Prophet Muhammad s.a.w for the first time and what are the first few verses that were revealed to him? Well, it all started when Prophet Muhammad s.a.w was sitting in the cave of Hira’ on a mountain called The Mountain of Light also known as ‘Jabal Nur’. As Prophet Muhammad s.a.w felt restless and helpless with the decadence of the Meccan Quraisy, the Prophet s.a.w found peace and solace during his seclusion in the cave of Hira’. Little did he know that one of the days of his stay in the cave, that Angel Jibril a.s. would visit him. But what happened when Jibril came to meet the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w? In a hadith reported by Sayyidatina Aisyah r.a. and narrated by Imam Al-Bukhari, “..The angel came to him and asked him to read. The Prophet s.a.w replied, " I do not know how to read. ’’ The Prophet s.a.w added, " The angel caught me (forcefully) and pressed me so hard that I could not bear it anymore. He then released me and again asked me to read and I replied, 'I do not know how to read.”Thereupon he caught me again and pressed me a second time till I could not bear it anymore. He then released me and again asked me to read but again I replied, “I do not know how to read !?” Thereupon he caught me for the third time and pressed me, and then released me and said , " " Read in the name of your Lord, who has created (all that exists), created man from a clot. Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous. ” (Surah Al-'Alaq, 96:1-5) The first revelation that Allah s.w.t. revealed to Prophet Muhammad s.a.w was the commandment for his people to seek knowledge, through the spirit of Iqra’ (reading). This set the foundational basis of the Prophetic message to humanity. The importance of knowledge is clearly expounded by the Prophet. This promotion of knowledge for all humankind had enlightened humanity from the ignorance of the Dark Ages. Allah s.w.t. commanded us to read, to ponder, to analyse and to understand the verse of the Quran. The Quran is indeed a gift for all humankind. Each verse in the Quran is so unique that it can never be rephrased even by a linguist expert. Given that the Quran is very significant for Muslims, let’s appreciate the Quran by taking a first step of reading this final scripture revealed to humanity, even if we have yet to understand the Arabic language. Here are 5 reasons why we should recite the Quran: 1. You will get rewarded for every letter that you read from the Quran. Yes! You read it right, not 1 surah, not 1 ayat, not 1 word, but you will be rewarded for each letter that is recited from the verses of the Quran. Sayyidatina Aishah r.a reported: مَن قَرَأَ حَرْفًا مِنْ كِتَابِ اللَّهِ فَلَهُ بِهِ حَسَنَةٌ وَالْحَسَنَةُ بِعَشْرِ أَمْثَالِهَا لاَ أَقُولُ الم حَرْفٌ وَلَكِنْ أَلِفٌ حَرْفٌ وَلاَمٌ حَرْفٌ وَمِيمٌ حَرْفٌ ‏ Whoever recites a letter from Allah's Book, then he receives the reward from it, and the reward of ten the like of it. I do not say that Alif Lam Mim is a letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter (Sunan At-Tirmizi) 2. Quran Calms the Soul. Reciting the Quran is part of remembrance (zikir). It is also a form of Ibadah. When you do zikir, you will attain inner peace and solace as mentioned in the Quran: الَّذينَ آمَنوا وَتَطمَئِنُّ قُلوبُهُم بِذِكرِ اللَّهِ ۗ أَلا بِذِكرِ اللَّهِ تَطمَئِنُّ القُلوبُ “ Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah, hearts are assured ” (Surah Ar-Ra’ad, 13:28) 3. You stutter and can't get it right? No problem. You will be rewarded for that too! For some of us, the Arabic language is a foreign language. When you are a beginner, you tend to stutter and may find it difficult to read it fluently. Not understanding what you are reading is already frustrating enough, what more to practice to read in different language and letters. But fear not, Allah s.w.t. is All-Knowing, Most Merciful. He will reward you twice for the hard work of trying to read the verses of the Quran! Sayidatina Aishah (r.a.) reported: " The one who is proficient in the recitation of the Qur'an will be with the honourable and obedient scribes (angels), and he who recites the Qur'an and finds it difficult to recite, doing his best to recite it in the best way possible, will have two rewards ." (Sahih Al-Bukhari & Muslim) 4. Quran is a Source of Guidance As a human being, we constantly need someone to talk and to share our problems. While making dua is one of the means to talk to Allah, you can also find answers while reading the Quran. It is one of the ways how Allah communicates with us. He sent down guidance for us 1400 years ago! Allah s.w.t. mentioned in the Quran in a couple of Surahs: كِتابٌ أَنزَلناهُ إِلَيكَ لِتُخرِجَ النّاسَ مِنَ الظُّلُماتِ إِلَى النّورِ “A Book We have sent down to you so that you may bring forth mankind from the darkness into the light..”. (Surah Ibrahim, 14:1) Read the Quran and you will be amazed how it speaks and comforts you and that the answers to your worries may just be in between the lines. Remember, when reciting the Quran, do ensure to find the right source of interpretations and get clarifications from certified Asatizah as well. 5. The Quran is made easy for us. To this, Allah s.w.t. says in the Quran: وَلَقَد يَسَّرنَا القُرآنَ لِلذِّكرِ فَهَل مِن مُدَّكِرٍ And We have certainly made the Quran easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember? (Surah Al-Qamar, 54:17) Allah s.w.t, the Most Merciful mentioned in the Quran four times specifically in Surah Al-Qamar, that He had made it easy for us to recite and comprehend, to remind mankind that regardless of who we are, we are constantly in need of reminders from Him. Allah s.w.t. mentioned in Surah As-Sad: كِتابٌ أَنزَلناهُ إِلَيكَ مُبارَكٌ لِيَدَّبَّروا آياتِهِ وَلِيَتَذَكَّرَ أُولُو الأَلباب [This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [Oh Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded (Surah Sad 38:29) While it is recommended that we strive to understand the Quran, this does not mean that we can interpret the Quran once we read its translation on our own. We certainly need guidance from credible asatizah to explain the tafsir of the Quran. And when you make an effort to read and understand the Quran, Allah s.w.t. will open the gates of knowledge and wisdom for you to understand His beautiful words! Insya’Allah. So what are you waiting for? Let us take this opportunity in this blessed month of Ramadan, the month revelation, to appreciate the gift of the Quran. Learning the Quran is a lifelong journey, never stop learning and keep improving yourself as a Muslim! “ Everybody has to start somewhere. Perfection doesn't happen right away .” May Allah s.w.t. guide us and ease our path in seeking knowledge. We are Offering Online Quran Classes with Best Tutors. His father passed away before his birth, and by the age of six, Muhammad's mother, Amina, also died. This profound early loss instilled in him a deep empathy for the less fortunate. The geographical context in which Muhammad lived. As he grew, Muhammad earned the nickname “Al-Amin,” meaning “the trustworthy,” due to his honesty and integrity. These qualities laid a strong foundation for his later role as a prophet. His experiences with diverse cultures and beliefs during trade travels enriched his understanding of humanity and spirituality, crafting a vision that would resonate with many. The Revelation: A Turning Point At the age of 40, Muhammad’s life transformed radically. While meditating in the Cave of Hira, he received the first revelation from the Angel Gabriel. This pivotal moment marked the start of a spiritual journey that would eventually give rise to Islam, a faith now followed by over 1.9 billion people worldwide. The revelations he received over the next 23 years focused on essential themes like monotheism, social justice, and moral integrity . These messages resonated deeply with marginalized communities, offering hope and resilience against the social injustices prevalent at the time. The sacred site where Muhammad received his first revelations. The Messenger: Propagation of a New Faith Despite strong opposition from the Quraysh tribe and the social elite, Muhammad remained dedicated to his mission. His call for equality and spiritual awakening challenged the existing power structures, resulting in persecution for him and his early followers. Initially, Muhammad preached in Mecca. However, facing escalating danger, he migrated to Medina in 622 CE, an event known as the Hijra. In Medina, he not only continued to share Islam but also established a vibrant community governed by the principles he advocated. This migration laid the foundation for what would evolve into an Islamic state, showcasing Muhammad's skills as a political leader who unified a previously fragmented tribal society. The Teachings: Principles of Islam Central to Muhammad's teachings are the Five Pillars of Islam —Shahada (faith), Salah (prayer), Zakat (charity, which requires Muslims to give 2.5% of their savings), Sawm (fasting), and Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca, which every Muslim must undertake at least once if able). These practices nurture a strong connection to God and foster a sense of community and responsibility toward others. The Quran, the holy book of Islam, serves as a guiding text for millions around the globe. Its verses encompass spiritual, social, and ethical dimensions of life. Muhammad's life exemplified the values expressed in the Quran, illustrating how to live by these teachings. An intricate depiction of the Quran, the holy book of Islam. Mysticism and Legacy: The Spiritual Interpretation Over the centuries, Muhammad's image has evolved, blending history with layers of mysticism. For many, he serves not just as a prophet, but as a spiritual guide illuminating the path of humility and compassion. Multiple interpretations and schools of thought within Islam reveal the depth of Muhammad’s legacy. Scholars argue his teachings should be viewed not merely as rules, but as moral lessons aimed at fostering a just and caring society. The Modern Context: Muhammad's Influence Today Today, Muhammad’s teachings continue to influence ethical living and promote community harmony in increasingly divided societies. His message fosters dialogue and understanding among different cultures and faiths, urging individuals to look beyond their differences. The principles taught by Muhammad shape legal, social, and cultural practices in Muslim-majority countries and affect interactions among diverse populations globally. His life encourages each of us to reflect on our responsibilities to one another, irrespective of faith or background. Reflecting on Muhammad's Impact The legacy of Muhammad is a rich tapestry woven from his teachings, actions, and lasting influence. Studying his life offers valuable insights into human dignity, social justice, and the value of compassion. By reflecting on this enigmatic figure, we come to understand the principles that guide us in today's world. Acknowledging Muhammad’s historical significance means embracing the enduring values that inspire generations, promoting a more inclusive and harmonious society. In a world often characterized by division, embracing Muhammad's teachings can unite us. His legacy speaks not only of faith but of action that encourages each person to positively contribute to their community.
